Please Understand

Day 2 Prompt for Blog 30 days of Diabetes: What issues are important to you? If you could tell your representatives one thing about diabetes, what would it be?

Current Blood Sugar: 157, this is a good number for me considering it is about 1.5 hours after lunch.  Let's hope it goes down instead of going up!

So this prompt is a very hard one for me.  I am often steer clear of discussing all things politics and generally all things religion.  It's not because I don't have a point of view on these things (believe me I do!), I just prefer to keep them to myself.  There are many things dislike about politics.  But the one that I hate the most is that I often find that talking politics leads to a heated discussion...dare I say argument..about who is right and who is wrong.  I generally just like to avoid these confrontations because I truly believe that a person's opinion is just that and your opinion cannot be right or wrong, it is what you feel is right and who am I (or who are you) to tell me what I believe is wrong?

When it comes to healthcare and diabetes, I am torn.  I am grateful to have awesome insurance.  I cannot say enough about how well my insurance company treats me.  I have not once run into any problems with care or diabetes supplies.  My hubby and I have worked very hard to get where we are today and he has worked very hard to secure a career with a company that provides top of the line insurance.  I am privileged in this aspect, I know that.

The new healthcare reform scares me a little because it threatens to take away some of coverage that my insurance offers.  On the other hand it is the best thing that has happened to diabetics in a long time.  I know some day hubby wont have this job and it scares me to death what that will mean for my care.  I think it is so important that healthcare be provided to those that need it most and that pre-existing condition policies should be eliminated.

The issues that are most important to me revolve around my healthcare.  I want to be able to keep my good insurance and I want others who do not have good insurance to be able to get it.  I want to be able to get quality supplies and healthcare at reasonable price.  I want education about diabetes to be above all on the top of the list.

If I could say one thing to a representative about diabetes...I honestly don't think I could do it.  I have never been able to say one thing about diabetes to anyone.  I either find myself having to dispell myths or explain my day-to-day care, or tell someone the difference between Type 1 and Type 2, etc, etc.  There is no "one" thing you can say about diabetes becuase so many people don't understand the disease.  Maybe this is what I would say to a politician...maybe that is the best thing you can say to anyone...."please understand."
